IELTS Academic vs General Training: Key Differences Explained

IELTS comes in two versions: Academic and General Training. They share the same Listening and Speaking tests but differ in Reading and Writing.

When to take Academic

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate university admissions worldwide.
  • Professional registration for doctors, nurses, teachers, and engineers in countries like the UK, Australia, and Canada.

When to take General Training

  • Skilled worker immigration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK.
  • Work experience programmes.
  • Secondary school admissions.

Reading differences

Academic Reading uses complex texts from academic journals and magazines. General Training uses texts from advertisements, notices, workplace materials, and newspapers. General Training Reading is considered slightly easier in terms of vocabulary.

Writing differences

Academic Task 1: describe a graph, chart, diagram, or map. General Training Task 1: write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal).

Task 2 (essay) is the same for both versions.

Are the scores comparable?

Yes — a Band 7 in Academic and a Band 7 in General Training represent the same level of proficiency. However, immigration authorities and universities specify which version they accept — always check before booking.
