8 Common IELTS Listening Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
6/10/2026

IELTS Listening is often where students lose easy marks. The audio plays only once, so good technique matters as much as your English. Avoid these eight mistakes.
- Not reading ahead
Use the time before each section to read the questions and predict answers. If a gap needs a number, a date, or a name, you will catch it faster.
- Ignoring word limits
'No more than two words' means two words maximum. Writing three loses the mark even if the meaning is right.
- Spelling errors
A correct answer spelled wrongly is marked wrong. Practise spelling common words: Wednesday, accommodation, receipt, address.
- Missing plural 's'
If you hear 'books', write 'books', not 'book'. Listen to the end of words.
- Getting stuck on one question
If you miss an answer, let it go immediately and focus on the next — chasing it makes you miss two more.
- Falling for distractors
Speakers often correct themselves: 'It's at 5... sorry, 5:30.' The answer is the corrected one. Listen for 'actually', 'sorry', 'but'.
- Wrong number/date format
Write numbers clearly. '15' and '50' sound similar — listen to the stress.
- Not transferring carefully
When copying answers, keep them in the right order and matched to the right number.
Practice tip: do a full Listening section in IELTSAlert, then review every wrong answer and write down WHY you missed it. After 5 tests you will see your own pattern — and fixing one habit can add half a band.
