IELTS Writing Task 2: How to Reach Band 7
6/12/2026

Band 7 in IELTS Writing Task 2 is not about big words — it is about a clear answer, good structure, and accurate sentences. Here is a method you can repeat in every essay.
- Understand the question first
Spend 3–4 minutes underlining the keywords and deciding your position. Most band-6 essays lose marks because they answer a slightly different question. If it asks 'to what extent do you agree?', state clearly how much you agree in the introduction.
- Use a simple 4-paragraph structure
- Introduction: paraphrase the question + give your clear position.
- Body paragraph 1: your first main idea + explanation + example.
- Body paragraph 2: your second main idea + explanation + example.
- Conclusion: restate your position in different words.
- One idea per paragraph
Develop ONE idea fully instead of listing many. Examiners reward depth: claim → explain why → give a specific example → say what it means.
- Aim for accuracy, not difficulty
A Band 7 writer makes few errors. Use a mix of simple and complex sentences, but only use structures you can control. Two clear sentences beat one confusing long one.
- Write enough
Write at least 260–280 words. Under 250 words is penalised.
- Leave 3 minutes to check
Look for: missing 's' on verbs/plurals, articles (a/an/the), and capital letters. Fixing five small errors can lift your Grammar score.
Practice tip: write one Task 2 essay, then paste it into IELTSAlert to get an instant band estimate and see exactly which sentences are weak — then rewrite those sentences. Repeating this loop is the fastest way to improve.
