IELTS Writing Task 2 Opinion Essay: A Template That Actually Works
6/23/2026

Opinion essays ('Do you agree or disagree?') are the most common Task 2 type. Having a reliable template means you spend your mental energy on ideas and language — not structure.
The Template
Introduction (3 sentences)
- Paraphrase the statement: 'It is often argued that…'
- State your position clearly: 'I fully agree with this view.' or 'While there is some merit to this claim, I believe… because…'
- Outline what you will discuss (optional at Band 7+).
Body paragraph 1 — Your main reason (6–8 sentences)
- Claim: state your first reason.
- Explain: why is this true?
- Example: give a specific, real-world example.
- Result: what does this show?
Body paragraph 2 — Your second reason or a concession (6–8 sentences) If you fully agree: give a second supporting reason. If you partially agree: 'Opponents argue that… However, this view overlooks…'
Conclusion (2–3 sentences) 'In conclusion, I believe… because… and… Governments/individuals/companies should therefore…'
Band 7 vs Band 8 language example
Band 7: 'Many people think technology is bad for children.' Band 8: 'A significant body of research suggests that excessive screen time may impair the cognitive development of young children.'
The idea is the same — the language precision is different. Practise upgrading one sentence per essay.
